Background of POW/MIA Issue

  • Background of Korean War POW/MIA Issue
    The Korean War ended in July of 1953. The Chinese had controlled U.N. prisoners and were primarily responsible for accounting for them. POWs were returned throughout that summer during Operations Little and Big Switch.

  • Background of Other Cold War POW/MIA Issue
    There were many conflicts that made up the Cold War: the Berlin Wall crisis, The Korean War, The Bay of Pigs, Vietnam and, of course, the Arms Race. During the time between April 8, 1950 and October 21, 1970, 31 American planes were shot down.

  • Cold War Air Losses
    From the March, 1999 Coalition Newsletter
    Between the years 1950 and 1970, approximately thirty-nine U.S. Aircraft were shot down in and around the coast of the then Soviet Union. A total of 364 men was on board those planes.
